Seguramente hayas escuchado alguna vez los nombres Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, Endeavor…y es que la NASA y los proyectos aeronáuticos llaman la atención de cualquiera, desde pequeños a no tan pequeños. Para inaugurar el blog de Lanzadera Online, vamos a contaros la historia de la lanzadera de la NASA, algunas curiosidades, y porqué escogimos este nombre para representar a nuestra agencia.
Qué es una lanzadera?
Lanzadera es el término usado comúnmente para referirse a un transbordador espacial, consistente en una astronave reutilizable que transporta al espacio los objetos y tripulaciones necesarias para las misiones espaciales.
Las lanzaderas o Sistemas de Transporte Espacial (STS) son los vehículos espaciales utilizados por la NASA para sus vuelos espaciales tripulados. Fueron diseñados para ser el sistema bandera de exploración espacial tripulada de EE.UU., y durante los años 80 y 90 fueron los encargados de elevar los distintos módulos de la Estación Espacial Internacional y su provisión regular de suministros.
Partes de una lanzadera espacial
Cada lanzadera espacial es un sistema de lanzamiento reutilizable que se compone de tres conjuntos principales: el vehículo orbital reutilizable (OV), el tanque externo de combustible desechable (ET), y los dos parcialmente reutilizables cohetes impulsores sólidos (SRBs).
VEHÍCULO ORBITAL REUTILIZABLE (OV)
Vehículo orbital, orbitador o transbordador, que es el transbordador espacial en sentido estricto. Es aquí donde se transportan la carga útil y los astronautas hasta la órbita terrestre. Una vez finalizada su misión, maniobra entrando en la atmosfera terrestre para después planear y realizar el aterrizaje de manera similar a la de un avión convencional.
TANQUE EXTERNO DE COMBUSTIBLE DESECHABLE (ET)
De color oscuro y gran tamaño, situado en la parte central de la estructura, encontramos el tanque externo de combustible. Alimenta los motores principales, se libera a los 8 minutos del lanzamiento a una altitud de 100 km, rompiéndose en pedazos que caen al mar sin ser recogidos.
COHETES IMPULSORES SÓLIDOS REUTILIZABLES (SRBs)
Los cohetes impulsores proporcionan la energía necesaria para alcanzar la atmósfera de la tierra. Ambos tanques se separan a 2 minutos del lanzamiento y 66 km de altura, pero a diferencia del tanque externo, estos abren sus paracaídas y son recogidos posteriormente debido a su gran valor.
Porqué la lanzadera espacial fue una de las mayores innovaciones de la NASA?
Durante la década de los 60, la NASA comenzó a plantear la posibilidad de desarrollar vehículos espaciales reutilizables que pudieran reemplazar a los sistemas de uso único como el Apollo. A su vez, la Fuerza Aérea Americana (USAF), también estaba interesado por sistemas más pequeños y de mayor maniobrabilidad y en los años 70, ambas instituciones se unieron con este mismo objetivo.
La inflación, la Guerra de Vietnam y la Crisis del Petróleo de 1973 obligaron a recortar el presupuesto aeroespacial al máximo, confirmándose la necesidad de generar un cohete reutilizable. Tras varios recortes adicionales en el presupuesto por la administración de Nixon y varios reajustes en el diseño, se optó finalmente por una fórmula de lanzadera-trasbordador que se desprendiera y recuperara posteriormente, más sencillo y barato, y sacar el combustible del orbitador a un tanque externo para aumentar la capacidad de carga a costa de desechar el tanque externo.
El transbordador espacial fue la primera nave espacial orbital diseñada para su reutilización parcial (cada transbordador tiene una vida útil proyectada de 100 lanzamientos!) y la primera capaz de poner satélites en órbita y traerlos de vuelta la superficie. Cuando la misión se completa, los astronautas activan los propulsores del sistema de maniobra orbital (OMS) y re-entran en la atmósfera terrestre. El transbordador desciende y aterriza, actuando como un planeador, siendo capaz de hacer un aterrizaje completo sin el uso de ningún sistema de propulsión.
Los transbordadores dejaron de utilizarse en 2011 tras casi 30 años de servicio y dar un giro inigualable a la ciencia aeronáutica. Su capacidad de reutilización supuso una revolución en la gestión de los proyectos aeronáuticos, incalculables ahorros a la NASA y la gestión de tareas clave tales como la rotación de la tripulación de las estaciones espaciales o la recuperación de satélites.

- Curiosidad 1. El primer Orbitador fue diseñado bajo el nombre de ¨Constitution¨, sin embargo, una campaña masiva de cartas de fanáticos de la serie Star Trek convenció a la Casa Blanca para rebautizar al orbitador como «Enterprise».
- Curiosidad 2. En 1995, la misión STS70 se retrasó debido a que los pájaros carpinteros autóctonos de la zona agujerearon con su pico el aislamiento exterior de espuma del tanque del Discovery. Desde entonces, la NASA añadía a la estructura señuelos con forma de búho para alejar las aves de la zona, que deben ser retirados antes del lanzamiento.

You’ve probably ever heard the names Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavor … NASA aeronautical projects attract the attention of everyone, from young to not so young. To inaugurate Lanzadera Online Blog, we will tell the story of the NASA shuttle, some curiosities, and why we chose this name to represent our agency.
What is a space shuttle?
Lanzadera is the commonly used term to refer to a space shuttle, consisting of a reusable spacecraft carrying space objects and crews necessary for space missions.
The shuttles or Space Transportation System (STS) are spacecraft used by NASA for its manned spaceflight. They were designed to be the USA flagship system in manned space exploration, and during the 80s and 90s were responsible systems for raising the various modules of the International Space Station and its regular supply.
Parts of a space shuttle
Each space shuttle is a reusable launching system, consisting of three main sets: the reusable orbital vehicle (OV), the external disposable fuel tank (ET), and the two partially reusable solid rocket boosters (SRBs).
REUSABLE ORBITAL VEHICLE (OV)
Also known as orbiter, it is the space shuttle strictly. This is where the payload and astronauts are transported to Earth orbit. After completing its mission, it maneuvers back, entering the Earth’s atmosphere and carrying out a landing, similar to conventional aircrafts.
EXTERNAL FUEL TANK (ET)
Dark and large, located in the central part of the structure, we find the external fuel tank. It feeds the main engines during take off, released 8 minutes after launch at an altitude of 100 km, breaking into pieces and falling into the sea without being collected.
REUSABLE SOLID ROCKET BOOSTERS (SRBs)
The rocket boosters provide the necessary energy to reach the Earth´s atmosphere. Both tanks are separated 2 minutes after launch and 66 km heigh, but unlike the external tank, they open their parachutes and are subsequently collected due to its great value.
Why was the Space Shuttle one of the greatest innovations of NASA?
During the 60s, NASA began to explore the possibility of developing reusable space vehicles that could replace single-use systems such as Apollo. At the same time, the US Air Force (USAF), was also interested in smaller and more maneuverable systems and finally in the 70s, both institutions joined a common project with the same objective.
Inflation, Vietnam War and 1973 oil crisis forced to cut the aerospace budget to the maximum, confirming the need to create a reusable rocket. After several additional budget cuts by the Nixon Administration and several adjustments in the design, NASA finally opted for a shuttle-formula, to disengaged and recovered later, simpler and cheaper, and remove the fuel from the orbiter to a tank to increase the external load capacity at the cost of disposing of the external tank.
The space shuttle was the first orbital spacecraft designed for partial reusability (each shuttle has a projected lifespan of 100 launches!) and the first system able to put satellites in orbit and bring them back to the surface. When the mission is complete, the astronauts activate the propellers of the orbital maneuvering system (OMS) and re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere. The shuttle descends and lands, acting as a glider, being able to make a full stop landing without using any propulsion system.
Space shuttles were discountinued in 2011 after nearly 30 years of service and giving a unique twist to aeronautical science. Its reusability meant a revolution in the management of aeronautical projects, incalculable savings to NASA and allowed key management tasks such as rotation crew space stations or satellites recovery.

- Curiosity 1. The first orbiter was designed under the name of Constitution, however, a massive letter-writing campaign from fans of the Star Trek series convinced the White House to rename the orbiter as «Enterprise».
- Curiosity 2. In 1995, the STS 70 mission was delayed because the native carpentersbirds in the area pierced Discovery outer insulation foam tank. Since then, NASA added owl shaped lures to the structure to ward off birds in the area, which must be removed before launch.
